It creates procrastination. Comparing to others is a misstep in creative work. We are all on a spectrum and we cannot all be the "best" artist or writer out there. We can only be who we are now. Time, effort and practice will show rewards. Be yourself!
We do not all have the same amount of time to focus on our craft . We have lives and responsibilities. I enjoy my craft and often felt guilty making the time to indulge in it...well, that was me years ago. No more. I found the following Martha Graham quote way back and wrote it down for myself. I am sharing it because I think every creative needs to understand your skill is to believe in yourself, be open and trust you are doing creative work because it is your expression. Keep that channel open. Be well!

My goal has always been to write and/or illustrate children's books. I doubt I am done learning.
It began years ago when I enrolled in a course that taught writing children's books through the postal service. Followed years later, by another for art by mail delivery. Both were a slow and lonely slog. I need a computer to type properly minus the "Whiteout" distraction. Email and online are way more responsive! Writing and art has always been my entertainment and self-improvement strategy. After years working alone, I did decide to put my writing online and began to publish with several online sites. That was scary but liberating. For awhile it was also addictive. It provided me with a writing community to chat with and gain some confidence. Lately, the courses I take offer something new or another way to approach writing and art. I have joined critique groups in the past. I am now a member of SCWBI and have done meetups in my local area. I began writing for picture books but as I read books for children I realized Middle Grade is where my heart is. I want to add humour and maybe a few scary scenes from my Masterclass course from R.L. Stine. As long as this has taken, I still wake up eager to learn a little more. Each day is a day of discovery. Are there others out there like me? I think there are. It is a labour of love to want to write for children and brighten their days and give them hope, entertainment and maybe a few laughs. It is a tall order to complete. There is a sophisticated and demanding audience out there! |
